China has formally welcomed the newly appointed ambassadors of Nigeria and South Africa, marking a fresh phase in diplomatic engagement between Beijing and two of Africa’s leading economies.
Assistant Foreign Minister and Director-General of the Protocol Department of China’s Foreign Ministry, Hong Lei, received copies of the credentials of the new envoys during separate ceremonies in Beijing.
The presentation of credentials is a key diplomatic procedure that officially recognises ambassadors as representatives of their respective governments before they begin their duties in the host country.
Hong Lei welcomed the ambassadors and reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with both Nigeria and South Africa, according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The Nigerian and South African ambassadors are expected to play central roles in advancing cooperation in areas including trade, investment, infrastructure development, cultural exchanges and multilateral engagement.
China has maintained strong diplomatic and economic ties with both African nations, with Nigeria serving as one of its largest trading partners in West Africa and South Africa remaining a strategic partner within the BRICS framework.
The credential presentation comes as China continues to deepen its engagement across Africa through economic cooperation, development partnerships and people-to-people exchanges.
Diplomatic observers say the arrival of the new ambassadors could further enhance collaboration on shared development goals and international issues of mutual interest.
