ICAN said its internal monitoring team is reviewing the incidents, promising to apply disciplinary measures in line with its rules and professional ethics.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has launched an investigation into a viral video alleging impersonation during one of its professional examinations.

In a statement signed by its Registrar/Chief Executive, Lanre Olasunkanmi, the institute reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for all forms of examination malpractice, stressing that the credibility of its processes would not be compromised.

The footage circulating on social media shows two suspected proxies accused of writing examinations on behalf of senior officials.

  • In one clip, a female proxy was accused of sitting the test for the Taraba State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economy, Sarah Adi.

  • In another, a male suspect was alleged to have been impersonating a bank manager.

ICAN said its internal monitoring team is reviewing the incidents, promising to apply disciplinary measures in line with its rules and professional ethics.

“ICAN’s examination processes are guided by globally accepted standards of integrity, and any attempt to compromise them is treated with utmost seriousness,” the statement read.
“Appropriate disciplinary measures will be applied, and the findings will be communicated transparently to stakeholders.”

The institute also urged the public to refrain from speculation, assuring that due process would be followed.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Sarah Adi denied any involvement in the alleged impersonation, describing the allegations as politically motivated.

Speaking by phone, she alleged that a cartel opposed to her reforms was behind the scandal, citing her efforts to remove ghost workers and her political visibility in Taraba State.

“I don’t know anything about their claims, and my boss, the governor, has confidence in me never to disappoint him,” Adi said.
“Do not be surprised to hear or see that I would be called out again for another accusation. We are beginning to identify the unseen hands.”

The scandal has sparked debate online about the integrity of Nigeria’s professional certification systems. Stakeholders say ICAN’s swift and transparent handling of the matter will be crucial in safeguarding the reputation of the institute and the accounting profession at large.
