Peter Obi has praised Afrobeats star Davido for using a global stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup countdown concert to draw attention to Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and the plight of abducted schoolchildren.
In a statement posted on his official X account, the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate described the singer’s actions as a patriotic effort that went beyond entertainment and brought international attention to the country’s security challenges.
Davido appeared at the FIFA World Cup countdown concert wearing a customised leather jacket adorned with the names of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The jacket also featured the inscription “BRING THEM HOME” across the back.

“Davido’s impactful gesture in drawing global attention to Nigeria’s security challenges warrants commendation,” Obi said.
“He prominently displayed the names of schoolchildren who had been held captive for an extended period, advocating for their safe return. By utilising his international platform, Davido effectively highlighted Nigeria’s security crisis, transcending mere entertainment.”
Obi argued that Nigeria’s persistent insecurity deserves greater international attention, particularly amid concerns about the government’s ability to tackle the crisis effectively.
The former Anambra State governor also linked the issue to Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that the country’s failure to qualify was not due to a lack of talent.
“Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup stems not from a lack of talent but from a conspicuous deficiency in political leadership that has failed to create an enabling environment for talent development,” he said.
According to Obi, the World Cup has nevertheless showcased Nigerian excellence through music and sport, with several Nigerian artists playing prominent roles in the tournament and many players of Nigerian heritage representing other nations.
“This assertion is underscored by two notable occurrences during the tournament: the vibrant participation and impressive performances of Nigerian artists, and the presence of numerous Nigerians representing other nations on the field,” he added.
Obi said the developments should serve as a reminder to political leaders of the need to create opportunities for young Nigerians to realise their potential.
Davido is among four Nigerian music stars featured on the official 2026 FIFA World Cup soundtrack album, alongside Burna Boy, Rema and Ayra Starr.
The tournament’s cultural celebrations began with Burna Boy performing alongside Colombian singer Shakira at the opening ceremony in Mexico City. Rema also featured prominently during the event, joining BLACKPINK’s Lisa and Brazilian singer Anitta for a live performance of their collaborative song, “Goals”.
The appearance of Nigerian artists at one of the world’s biggest sporting events has been widely viewed as further evidence of the global influence of Afrobeats, even as concerns over insecurity continue to dominate discussions at home.
