Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Türkiye following high-level engagements held on the sidelines of the 51st D-8 Commission Meeting in Ankara.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nigeria’s D-8 Commissioner, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, PhD, participated in the 51st D-8 Commission Meeting held in Ankara, Türkiye, from June 15 to 16, 2026. The meeting also coincided with activities marking the 29th anniversary of the Developing Eight (D-8) Organization for Economic Cooperation.

The gathering brought together representatives of member states to review the organization’s activities and explore strategies for enhancing economic cooperation, trade, and sustainable development among member countries.

On the sidelines of the event, Ambassador Ahmed held a bilateral meeting with Türkiye’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Musa Kulaklikaya, on June 17, 2026.
During the discussions, both officials reviewed the existing cordial relations between Nigeria and Türkiye and explored opportunities for expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The talks focused on strengthening diplomatic engagement, economic partnerships, and collaboration on regional and international issues.

The meeting underscored the commitment of both countries to deepening bilateral ties and advancing shared development goals through enhanced cooperation and dialogue.
The D-8 Organization, which comprises Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Türkiye, was established to promote economic collaboration and development among member states.
