A video showing a visibly injured 18-year-old woman, alleged to be a victim of domestic abuse, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for urgent intervention across social media platforms.
The footage, which circulated online, showed the young woman with noticeable facial injuries as neighbours confronted a man identified as her husband. Witnesses accused him of subjecting her to repeated physical abuse and attempted to prevent him from taking her away.
In the video, one concerned bystander was heard saying, “You want to kill her. This girl is just 18 years. This man is brainwashing her; he is beating her daily.”
A separate clip later surfaced showing the young woman receiving medical attention at a hospital in the company of human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu. During the interaction, she appealed to members of the public not to seek the arrest of her husband despite the allegations.
“Please, I am begging you, people. It will be as if it is my fault. The mother does not like me, please. Let me just carry myself and be going,” she said.
The young woman further stated that she had no intention of returning to the marriage but still pleaded against legal action being taken against her husband.
“I am not going to the marriage again; you people should leave him. I won’t go to the marriage again; don’t arrest him,” she added.
The videos have generated intense public concern, with many Nigerians expressing fears for her safety and wellbeing. Several social media users have called on relevant authorities to ensure she receives adequate protection and support, while others highlighted the difficulties victims of domestic violence often face when attempting to leave abusive relationships.
Reacting to the reports, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency confirmed that it had commenced action on the matter, stating briefly: “We are on it.”
The incident has reignited discussions on domestic violence, victim protection, and the need for increased awareness, support systems, and timely intervention for individuals facing abuse. Authorities are expected to continue investigations as public attention remains focused on the case.
