The United States Mission in Nigeria has reminded Nigerian travellers to strictly comply with American immigration laws, warning that visa violations could jeopardise future opportunities to study, work or visit the country.

In a statement shared on its official social media platforms, the mission urged Nigerians to adhere to the conditions attached to their visas, maintain valid travel documents and leave the United States before their authorised stay expires.

“Staying compliant with U.S. immigration laws isn’t just the right thing to do; it protects your future and keeps opportunities open for Nigerian travellers,” the mission said.

The advisory comes amid continued efforts by US authorities to curb visa overstays and strengthen the integrity of the country’s immigration system.

The US Mission stressed that travellers must respect the terms of their visas regardless of the purpose of their visit.

“Whether you’re studying, working, or visiting the United States, always honour the terms of your visa. Follow the rules. Stay only for as long as you are authorised. Keep your documents updated. Make choices that safeguard your dreams,” the statement added.

Officials said compliance with immigration regulations helps preserve access to legitimate travel opportunities and supports stronger relations between Nigeria and the United States.

The mission also emphasised that respecting immigration procedures benefits both countries and protects future applicants seeking visas.

“When you respect the process, everyone wins,” the statement said.

The latest advisory reflects growing scrutiny of visa compliance by US authorities, particularly regarding overstays, which can result in visa cancellations, travel restrictions and difficulties obtaining future entry permits.

The mission noted that adherence to immigration rules remains essential to maintaining the integrity of the visa system and ensuring continued access for genuine travellers.
