Residents and businesses across Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi and Yobe states are set to experience temporary electricity disruptions as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) carries out maintenance work on its transmission infrastructure.
The utility company said the planned outage would also affect Gazaoua in neighbouring Niger Republic.
In a statement issued by TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah said the interruption was necessary to enable ongoing upgrade works at the Kumbotso 330-kilovolt transmission substation in Kano State.
According to the company, the maintenance forms part of efforts to strengthen the national transmission network and improve electricity reliability in the affected areas.
“The scheduled maintenance is to enable the TCN contractor to continue the ongoing upgrade of 330kV bus II jumpers and replace the existing 350mm² conductors with 800mm² conductors in order to strengthen the transmission network and improve power reliability,” Ms Mbah said.
TCN said customers supplied by Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), parts of Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC), and Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) would be affected during the maintenance period.
The company said the affected locations include Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, as well as Azare in Bauchi State, Nguru in Yobe State and Gazaoua in Niger Republic.
“As a result, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and some part of Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) and Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) will be unable to off-take power for distribution to their customers,” the statement added.
The latest disruption comes as electricity consumers across northern Nigeria continue to face supply challenges, with transmission upgrades and maintenance works frequently leading to temporary outages.
TCN did not specify the exact duration of the power interruption but said the exercise is aimed at improving the reliability and capacity of the transmission network once completed.
