The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Benin Zone, has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike across seven state-owned universities in Edo, Delta and Ondo states over the alleged failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement.
The union said the decision became necessary following what it described as persistent neglect of agreements aimed at improving the welfare of university lecturers and addressing challenges facing public universities.
Speaking after a zonal meeting, ASUU leaders expressed concern over the continued delay in implementing key aspects of the 2025 agreement, warning that members could withdraw their services indefinitely if urgent action is not taken.
According to the union, the affected institutions have continued to grapple with issues including unpaid salaries and allowances, poor funding, and other welfare-related concerns that have negatively impacted teaching, research and academic development.
ASUU called on the Federal Government and the affected state governments to honour their commitments and engage stakeholders to prevent another disruption to the academic calendar.
The union warned that failure to address the grievances within a reasonable timeframe could force lecturers to commence an indefinite strike, a move that would affect thousands of students across the seven universities.
Education stakeholders have expressed concern over the development, urging both parties to return to the negotiation table to avoid a prolonged industrial action that could further strain Nigeria’s higher education sector.
The latest threat comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilise the nation’s university system and prevent recurring strikes that have in the past disrupted academic activities across public tertiary institutions.
