Chelsea have completed the signing of experienced England midfielder Jordan Henderson from Premier League rivals Brentford on a two-year contract as manager Xabi Alonso continues his squad rebuild ahead of the new season.
The 36-year-old, a former Liverpool captain, joins the Blues after Brentford agreed to terminate his contract following Chelsea’s interest. Henderson arrives at Stamford Bridge just weeks after featuring in England’s 2026 World Cup squad.
Speaking after completing the move, Henderson said the ambition shown by Chelsea’s hierarchy and the opportunity to work under Alonso convinced him to make the switch.
“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” he said.
“I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction.”
The veteran midfielder added that he is determined to contribute both on and off the pitch.
“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
Henderson brings a wealth of experience to Chelsea, having won the Premier League and UEFA Champions League during a successful spell with Liverpool. He left Anfield for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq before moving to Ajax six months later, returning to England with Brentford last season.
The midfielder has earned 91 caps for England and was included in the country’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although his tournament was cut short after he suffered a broken arm.
Chelsea’s move for Henderson comes as the club continues an aggressive recruitment drive. The Blues signed veteran forward Danny Welbeck earlier this week after securing British-record signing Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million last month. Defenders Maxence Lacroix and Marco Palestra have also joined the squad.
Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season, narrowly behind Brentford, and missed out on European qualification. Alonso’s side begin their new league campaign away to Fulham at Craven Cottage later this month.
