The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing stricter measures to regulate private and voluntary schools, including a requirement for approval before any increase in tuition or other fees.
The bill was approved during Monday’s plenary after lawmakers considered and adopted the report of the House Committee on Education, which held public hearings and consulted stakeholders before presenting its recommendations.
The amendment creates the office of Executive Secretary to strengthen the administration and management of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board.
It also empowers the board to oversee proposed fee increases by private schools, a move lawmakers say is intended to protect parents and guardians from arbitrary tuition hikes while ensuring transparency in the education sector.
Speaking after the bill’s passage, Speaker Ismail Falgore praised lawmakers for their contributions throughout the legislative process.
“The amendment is a significant step toward improving the administration of private and voluntary schools in Kano State,” Mr Falgore said.
The legislation followed extensive consultations during public hearings organised by the House Committee on Education, with input from education stakeholders before its final approval.
If assented to by the governor, the amended law is expected to strengthen oversight of private educational institutions and improve accountability in the sector.
