US President Donald Trump approves the execution by firing squad of former US Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan, who kills 13 people and wounds more than 30 others in the Fort Hood shooting in Texas.

The Pentagon says Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth recommends the execution and Trump approves death by firing squad for Hasan, who is convicted of the mass shooting.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announces the decision on X.

“Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has recommended — and President Donald J. Trump has approved — death by U.S. Army firing squad for convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan,” Parnell says.

“The Secretary of the Army will set the time and place of the execution. Judgement day for Hasan has finally come,” he adds.

Hasan is sentenced to death by a military jury 13 year’s ago after being convicted of killing 13 people and injuring more than 30 others at the US Army’s Fort Hood base.

His execution is set to be the first carried out by the US military since 1961.

Hasan, a US-born Muslim of Palestinian descent, opens fire at a medical facility on the sprawling military base, which serves as a staging point for troops preparing to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Twelve of those killed and 30 of the wounded are soldiers. Hasan is shot and injured by a civilian police officer who responds to the attack and is left partially paralysed.

Prosecutors tell the military court that Hasan opposes US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and has communicated online with Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born radical cleric linked to al-Qaeda who is later killed in a US drone strike in Yemen.

Hasan represents himself during the trial, calls no witnesses and gives no testimony. His court-appointed defence lawyers express concern that he is seeking a death sentence.
