"Deputy Speaker Urges President Tinubu To Grant Nnamdi Kanu Freedom

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to show mercy and grant freedom to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB). Mr. Kalu made the appeal following the inaugural meeting of the House of Representatives committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC) at the National Assembly in Abuja.

In his address to journalists, Mr. Kalu praised President Tinubu for his unwavering support and commitment to peace, stability, and development in the South-East region. He highlighted that the President had demonstrated his dedication to the region through swift approval of the South-East Development Commission Bill, a legislative effort that had failed in previous assemblies.

The Deputy Speaker suggested that a political approach, rather than a legal one, should be used to secure Kanu’s release, emphasizing that the people of the South-East would be forever grateful if this appeal was granted. He expressed optimism that President Tinubu would respond favorably, noting that Kanu’s release would likely reduce insecurity in the region and foster development, in line with the objectives of the South East Development Commission.

Mr. Kalu also pointed out that those who exploit Kanu’s name to carry out criminal activities in the South-East would have no justification for their actions if Kanu were released.
