Naira Abuse: Court Adjourns Cubana Chief Priest’s Trial

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday adjourned the trial of celebrity bartender Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, to June 25, 2024. Okechukwu is facing three counts of alleged abuse of Naira notes. On April 17, 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arraigned Okechukwu for allegedly spraying and tampering with Naira notes during a social event at Eko Hotel in Lagos. Okechukwu pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted a bail set at N10m. The Supreme Court has set aside a judgment by the lower court that dismissed the terrorism charges against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. The apex court held that the court of appeal was wrong and that the trial court couldn’t try him because the prosecution violated his rights. In the judgment prepared by Justice Garba Mohammed, the court condemned the invasion of Kanu’s residence, declaring it irresponsible. Polls Offenders Trial Begins January, INEC, NBA List Prosecutors

The Independent National Electoral Commission and the Nigerian Bar Association will commence the prosecution of electoral offenders in January, Sunday PUNCH has learnt. Since 1999, there has been hardly any election that has not been characterised by offences in one form or the other. Such electoral offences include culpable homicide and unlawful possession of firearms, snatching and destroying of INEC items, misconduct at polling units and stealing of results, among others.
