President Bola Tinubu has officially appointed Abba Abubakar Aliyu as the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). His appointment, effective January 23, 2025, marks the beginning of a four-year tenure.

Aliyu had been serving as the agency’s Acting Managing Director since March 2024 before securing the substantive role.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Aliyu brings over two decades of experience in energy and organizational development across both private and public sectors. His expertise spans leadership roles in Nigeria’s on-grid and off-grid power sectors, as well as water resources and transportation.

Before this appointment, Aliyu headed the Project Management Unit at the Nigeria Electrification Project. He also served as General Manager of Corporate Services, Projects, and Research, and Deputy General Manager at Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading PLC (NBET).

President Tinubu expects Aliyu to leverage his extensive experience to drive REA’s mission of providing reliable electricity to rural communities, aligning with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for sustainable energy and power development.
