The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health-related concerns.

His resignation was communicated in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in a statement issued from the State House, noting that President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and commended Badaru for his service to the nation.

A replacement is expected to be named soon, with the President likely to forward a new nominee to the Senate before the end of the week.

Badaru, 63, previously served two terms as Governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before his appointment to the federal cabinet on August 21, 2023.

His departure comes at a crucial moment, following President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency.

The Presidency is expected to brief the country in the coming days on the scope and implementation of the new security measures.
