Rashidi Ladoja Crowned 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland in Historic Coronation Ceremony

Former Governor of Oyo State, Rashidi Ladoja, has been officially crowned as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland in a grand traditional ceremony held at the historic Mapo Hall, Ibadan.

The installation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the new Olubadan of Ibadanland marks a significant chapter in the ancient city’s royal history. His coronation followed traditional rites earlier in the day, including the symbolic receiving of the Akoko leaf at the Labosinde Compound in Oja’ba and the crowning ceremony at the Ose Meji Temple in the Ibadan South-East Local Government Area.

Governor Makinde to Present Staff of Office

Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to officially present the staff of office to the new monarch during the coronation ceremony, which drew a large crowd of dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders, and residents, all gathered to witness the historic event.

The colourful coronation was graced by several prominent figures, including:

  • Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade
  • Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye
  • Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III
  • Former Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun
  • Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso
  • Former Osun Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola
  • Chief Imam of Ibadan

Tight Security at Coronation Venue

To ensure a smooth and secure event, there was a heavy presence of security operatives, including personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army, deployed around Mapo Hall and strategic areas across Ibadan.

A Respected Throne With Unique Succession

The Olubadan throne is renowned for its transparent and well-structured succession system, which sets it apart from other traditional institutions in Nigeria. Ladoja ascended the throne following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who died on July 7, 2025.
