Despite the Federal Government’s promise to increase the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) allowance from N33,000 to N77,000 starting in February 2025, corps members across the country have expressed frustration over the continued delay in implementation.

Findings had it that the NYSC has yet to commence payment of the new allowance, with corps members confirming they only received N33,000 for February.

A corps member serving in Abia State, who spoke on condition of anonymity, criticized the government’s failure to fulfill its commitment. “The N33,000 is not enough. We cover accommodation, feeding, and transport costs ourselves. The government keeps making promises but has yet to deliver,” she lamented.

Another corps member in Osun State echoed similar concerns, stating that transportation alone costs her over N12,000 monthly. “I had to call my mother for financial support because the allowance is simply inadequate,” she said.

In Lagos, a corps member expressed frustration over the prolonged hardship. “We keep hearing about N77,000, but we have not seen anything,” she complained.

Efforts to get an official response from the NYSC Director of Communication, Carol Embu, proved futile as she neither answered calls nor responded to messages. However, a senior NYSC official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the scheme had yet to commence payments for the new allowance.

The delay has fueled growing concerns among corps members, many of whom struggle with the rising cost of living. With no clear timeline from the government, uncertainty looms over the implementation of the promised allowance.
