A fatal road accident claimed the life of one person and left another injured in a lone auto crash along the Gbongan-Ife expressway on Wednesday, April 2.
The Osun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the incident occurred around 8:45 a.m. in the Onirin area, a few kilometers from Ile-Ife, Osun State. Preliminary investigations attributed the crash to brake failure.
In a statement, the FRSC’s Sector Commander, T. A. Sokunbi, disclosed that none of the occupants of the white Foltom commercial truck, with registration number T-7852 LA, used seat belts or any protective gear at the time of the accident.
The vehicle, driven by Akeem Are Aderinsoye and transporting carbonated drinks, overturned, spilling its cargo onto the expressway.
Emergency responders rushed the injured victim to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, for treatment, while the deceased was taken to the hospital morgue.
Commander Sokunbi cautioned motorists against excessive speeding and emphasized the importance of ensuring vehicles are in proper working condition before embarking on journeys.
“The motoring public must prioritize vehicle maintenance and compliance with safety regulations to prevent such tragedies,” he stated.
In response to the incident, road safety advocacy groups have reiterated calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased public awareness on road safety measures to curb accidents on highways.
