Prince Abbas Sanusi, Galadima of Kano, Passes at 91

Prince Abbas Sunusi, the esteemed Galadima of Kano, has passed away at the age of 91. He breathed his last on Tuesday night in Kano, marking the end of an era for the ancient emirate.

A towering figure in Kano’s traditional council, the late Prince Sunusi previously served as Wamban Kano and a senior councilor under the revered Emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero. His death was confirmed in a telephone interview by Abdullahi Abbas, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano, and Alhaji Kabiru Abbas, who both acknowledged their father’s passing after a prolonged illness.

Prince Sunusi’s contributions to Kano’s cultural and political landscape were immense. He played a pivotal role in upholding the emirate’s traditions, serving faithfully under Emir Bayero, who ruled from 1963 to 2014. His influence as a statesman and custodian of heritage will be felt for generations to come.

The late Galadima is survived by his wives and 35 children, among them Abdullahi Abbas. His funeral is set to take place at 9 a.m. today at the emir’s palace, where dignitaries, community leaders, and family members will gather to pay their last respects.

In honor of his legacy, the Kano Emirate Council has declared a mourning period, reflecting the deep loss felt by the people of Kano. As the community grieves, they also celebrate the life of a man whose dedication and wisdom shaped the emirate’s history.
