The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has taken a significant step toward boosting regional connectivity with the implementation of the Praia-Dakar maritime link. A high-level workshop to assess and approve financing options for the vital project commenced on Monday, June 30, 2025, in Dakar, Senegal.

The workshop brings together policymakers, regional stakeholders, and development partners to evaluate the financial viability, governance models, and operational strategies for the proposed maritime corridor. It will also review potential socio-economic and environmental impacts and outline mitigation measures to ensure sustainable execution.

Key highlights include the exploration of mixed financing mechanisms, including public-private partnerships and regional development funds, alongside the establishment of a robust monitoring and evaluation framework with clear performance and sustainability indicators.

Delivering remarks on behalf of Sédiko Douka, ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitisation, the Director of Transport at the ECOWAS Commission, Chris Appiah, emphasised the strategic importance of the Praia-Dakar maritime link. He noted that the project will play a pivotal role in enhancing regional trade, deepening economic integration, and improving connectivity within the West African sub-region.
