Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to take decisive diplomatic action against former U.S. President Donald Trump over an alleged threat of military action against Nigeria.
In a statement shared via his verified Facebook page on Sunday, Gumi condemned the reported comments, describing them as a direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty. He called on federal government to respond firmly and without delay.
“For Trump to threaten a sovereign nation with military attack is a grave insult to our national dignity, but we can rise above it,” Gumi wrote.
He advised President Tinubu to summon the U.S. ambassador to Nigeria and demand an official retraction of the statement.
According to Gumi, if such a retraction is not issued, Nigeria should consider cutting diplomatic tieswith the United States.
“President Tinubu should summon the U.S. ambassador; they either withdraw their threats or we sever diplomatic relations with this irresponsible regime,” he added.
The cleric further emphasized that Nigeria has alternative global partners in both economic and military sectors, insisting that the nation must not remain dependent on any single foreign power for its progress or security.
