SSA Demands Urgent Security Reforms Amid Rising Violence in Southern Nigeria

The Southern Solidarity Alliance (SSA) has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and criminal activities in Southern Nigeria, urging security agencies to step up their efforts in tracking down perpetrators and restoring safety to the region.

In a statement signed by National Coordinator, Mr. Ndubuisi Okafor, and Chairman of the Media Committee, Mr. Ena Ighalo, the SSA condemned the failure of security forces to apprehend those responsible for the massacre of over 16 villagers in Ebonyi State and other violent crimes.

Disturbing Surge in Violence
The group highlighted worsening security challenges in Imo State, particularly in Orsu, where communities have been overrun by criminal gangs engaging in kidnappings, mutilations, and killings. The SSA referenced shocking videos showing beheadings and mass graves, calling the acts barbaric and inhumane.

Additionally, the SSA noted the recent kidnapping of Afenifere youth leader Prince Eniola Ojajuni between Ondo and Kogi States, further emphasizing the growing dangers of road travel.

Call for Immediate Government Action
The SSA urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Southern Governors to take urgent steps to address the security crisis. The group proposed several measures, including:

Technology-Driven Security – Deployment of AI-powered surveillance, security cameras, and drones to improve intelligence gathering, following Enugu State’s example.
Enhanced Interagency Collaboration – Direct coordination with the Office of the President to improve response times and accountability.
Clear Rules of Engagement – Ending extrajudicial killings and jungle justice through professional law enforcement training.
State Police Implementation – Accelerating constitutional amendments to allow state-controlled policing for localized crime prevention.
Strengthening Democratic Institutions – Ensuring social justice, transparency, and citizen protection from abuse by security forces.
Economic Empowerment for Youths – Expanding job creation and industrialization to deter young people from criminal activities.
Southern Security Summit – Organizing a high-level security meeting for leaders to strategize and implement effective security measures.
A Call for Urgent Reforms
With kidnappings, terrorism, and violent attacks increasing across Southern Nigeria, the SSA stressed that government intervention is critical. The group insists that authorities must leverage technology, intelligence, and strategic reforms to restore peace, stability, and economic progress in the region.

As insecurity worsens, the call for a Southern Security Summit becomes even more urgent, with stakeholders urged to prioritize citizens’ safety and regional stability.
