The Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is set to host its inaugural International Diplomatic and Security Conference in Abuja, a landmark event aimed at addressing Nigeria’s foreign policy direction amid evolving global security challenges.
Themed “Nigeria’s 4Ds Foreign Policy Strategy Amidst Global Security Challenges, Strategic Misperceptions, and the Age of Disinformation: The Role of Diplomacy, Intelligence, and Media in Shaping National and Global Stability,” the high-level conference will take place at the Rotunda Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, will deliver the keynote address, setting the tone for wide-ranging discussions on the intersection of diplomacy, intelligence, and media in navigating global uncertainties.
Expected attendees include former Nigerian presidents, governors, legislators, military and intelligence chiefs, ambassadors, and members of the diplomatic corps. The conference will feature a robust panel session with prominent voices such as:
The Ambassador of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS
The National Security Adviser (NSA)
The Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA)
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS)
Prof. Sheriff Ghali, University of Abuja
The event aims to foster deeper understanding of Nigeria’s 4Ds foreign policy pillars: Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora—and how they shape the country’s positioning in an increasingly complex international system.
A major highlight of the event will be a dedicated presentation on Disinformation and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI)—a growing threat in the digital age. Experts will explore how such interference can undermine national security, influence public opinion, and distort diplomatic relations, and discuss effective mitigation strategies.
DICAN emphasized that the conference reflects the urgent need for multi-stakeholder engagement in safeguarding Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives and national interests in an era of competing narratives and global instability.
Media professionals, diplomats, policymakers, academics, and security analysts are encouraged to attend and contribute to this critical dialogue on Nigeria’s global engagement strategy.
