The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic relations with Nigeria, revealing that bilateral trade between both countries reached \$13 billion in 2024.
U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills Jr., disclosed this during a reception held at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja to commemorate the 249th Independence Day of the United States of America.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Mills underscored the shared democratic ideals between both nations and noted the importance of partnerships in areas such as military cooperation, counterterrorism, economic development, and humanitarian support.
“We celebrate the shared spirit of freedom and democratic values that unite both countries, and our common belief in self-governance, fundamental rights, and the dignity of citizens,” he said.
He further highlighted how U.S.-Nigeria trade relations have contributed to job creation and economic opportunity on both sides, describing the \$13 billion trade volume as a testament to the growing economic bond.
Representing the Nigerian government, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Dunoma Omar-Hammad, congratulated the United States on its anniversary and emphasized the enduring importance of U.S.-Nigeria relations in promoting regional stability and mutual prosperity.
The event, themed *“Louisiana Night,”* featured cultural performances and musical entertainment, attracting top government officials, members of the diplomatic community, business leaders, and development partners.
Independence Day in the United States is celebrated annually on July 4th to mark the 1776 Declaration of Independence, signifying the country’s historic break from British rule and the birth of a democratic nation.
