The Delta State Government has officially banned illegal mining activities in the Ugbolu Mile Five area of Asaba and other parts of the state, citing severe environmental degradation.
Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, announced the ban in Asaba, warning illegal miners to cease operations or face arrest. He highlighted the damage caused to the landscape, noting that the activities had created deep craters and valleys, making the area unsuitable for residential and commercial development.
Aniagwu emphasized Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to improving the state’s infrastructure, pointing to ongoing rehabilitation projects such as the Ogbeogonogo-Nnebisi Road, stretching from Interbau Roundabout to Abraka.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and assist the government in safeguarding Delta’s natural resources from environmental degradation. The commissioner also called on opposition leaders to avoid spreading misinformation that could mislead the public, urging them to acknowledge the government’s tangible developmental efforts.
Reacting to comments made by former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, during his visit to Bomadi and Burutu, Aniagwu stated that Governor Oborevwori’s administration continues to respond to critics with verifiable projects across key sectors, including health, education, agriculture, and road infrastructure.
Listing ongoing developments, Aniagwu highlighted road construction efforts across the state, including:
Southern Delta University, Ozoro – major structural developments
Technical College, Irri – nearing completion
College of Health Technology, Ovrode – rapid progress
Ughelli-Asaba Road – receiving significant attention
Ohoror-Bomadi Road (47km) – under construction
Bomadi-Gbaregolor Road (18.6km) – recently approved
Okontu-Ogulaha Road (12.5km) – undergoing reconstruction
Warri Infrastructure Projects – multiple road and bridge projects, including the Trans Warri-Ode-Itsekiri Road, funded under ISPO for timely completion
Aniagwu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable development, urging the public to support efforts in protecting Delta State’s environment and infrastructure.
