Nigeria’s Super Eagles moved closer to a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a commanding performance against Mozambique in their Round of 16 clash in Fès.
Fresh from a flawless group-stage campaign, where they won all three matches to top Group C, the Super Eagles carried their fine form into the knockout encounter, asserting early dominance and maintaining control throughout the game.
Mozambique, making their first-ever appearance in the AFCON knockout stage after qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams in Group F, struggled to contain Nigeria’s attacking firepower despite their historic run in the tournament.
Nigeria opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Ademola Lookman calmly finished off a move created by Akor Adams. Victor Osimhen doubled the lead five minutes later, reacting quickest in the box to put the Super Eagles firmly in charge.
“We came into the game with confidence from the group stage and wanted to impose ourselves early,” a member of the Super Eagles’ camp said. “The goals gave us belief and control.”
Nigeria went into the break with a comfortable advantage after Lookman and Osimhen’s goals underlined their dominance, having recorded seven shots while Mozambique failed to register an attempt in the first half.
The Super Eagles continued where they left off after the restart, with Lookman turning provider again in the 47th minute as Osimhen completed his brace to make it three goals for Nigeria.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, the camp noted that “the focus was on staying disciplined and finishing our chances,” adding that the players were “determined to push deep into the tournament.”
