Leading political scientists in Nigeria have voiced growing concern that the country’s return to democratic rule in 1999 has not translated into meaningful improvements in its foreign policy direction or international standing.

In a statement signed by Professor Hassan Saliu, National President of the Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA), the scholars lamented that expectations of a revitalized and influential foreign policy in the post-military era remain unfulfilled after more than 25 years of uninterrupted democracy.

“The hope that Nigeria would witness enhanced global influence and diplomatic engagement following its return to democracy has not materialized,” the statement read.

The NPSA highlighted that Nigeria’s relations with other African nations, particularly within the West African sub-region, have been less cordial and effective than anticipated. The country, once regarded as Africa’s diplomatic powerhouse, now faces significant challenges in asserting leadership and commanding respect within regional blocs.

“Nigeria’s relegation from a leading African nation to merely a sub-regional player is a worrying trend that demands urgent attention,” the association stated.

Addressing Nigeria’s international alliances, the political scientists expressed concern over the country’s perceived subservience in its dealings with China. They cited public unease about certain bilateral agreements, which many believe compromise Nigeria’s long-term interests and economic sovereignty.

While relations with Western countries appear relatively stable, the statement cautioned that issues persist regarding Nigeria’s autonomy in foreign policy decision-making.

In light of these developments, the NPSA has called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s foreign policy framework to reflect evolving global realities and geopolitical shifts. The association also stressed the importance of adequate funding for the country’s diplomatic missions and international initiatives to effectively project national interests abroad.
