As the world marks International Women’s Day 2025, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, joins the global call to Accelerate Action in promoting gender equality and empowering women, particularly in rural communities.
In a statement to commemorate the day, NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, highlighted the crucial role women play in shaping society across politics, business, technology, and healthcare.
While acknowledging progress made in advancing women’s rights, she stressed the urgent need to dismantle barriers that hinder women’s full participation and development.
Amplifying the Voices of Rural Women
This year, NAWOJ FCT is placing special focus on rural women through its sub-theme, Amplifying the Voice of Rural Women. The association underscores the need to bridge gender gaps, enhance access to opportunities, and ensure that women in underserved communities are not left behind.
Women in rural areas continue to face major challenges, including limited access to education, economic opportunities, healthcare, and political representation. While we celebrate the strides made, we must take deliberate and bold actions to break these barriers, Ikpang stated.
A Call to Action for Stakeholders
NAWOJ FCT is calling on key stakeholders to take decisive action in advancing gender equality:
– Government agencies must implement and enforce policies that promote gender inclusion and provide sustainable support for rural women.
– Traditional and community leaders should champion women’s empowerment and work towards eliminating harmful cultural practices that hinder progress.
– Corporate organizations and development partners need to invest in skills training, entrepreneurship programs, and healthcare initiatives tailored to rural women.
– The media should continue using its platform to amplify women’s voices, advocate for gender-sensitive policies, and promote social justice.
NAWOJ FCT’s Commitment to Women’s Empowerment
“As journalists and advocates for women’s rights, NAWOJ FCT remains steadfast in ensuring that women’s issues stay at the forefront of national discourse. Through media advocacy, capacity-building initiatives, and strategic partnerships, the association will continue to push for policies and programs that uplift women across all sectors”.
“As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, we must go beyond discussions and take concrete steps toward a future where every woman—regardless of background—has equal opportunities to thrive, Ikpang emphasized”.
“Together, let’s accelerate action and amplify the voices of rural women”!
