Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation of Idris Olorunnimbe as NCC Board Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has requested the Nigerian Senate to confirm the appointment of Idris Olorunnimbe as the Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), as part of ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s communications and regulatory institutions.

The request was contained in an official letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

In the same communication, President Tinubu also asked the Senate to confirm Dr Aminu Wada as Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, a position he currently holds.

Other NCC Board nominees include:

  • Abraham Oshidami – Executive Commissioner, Technical Services
  • Rimini Makama – Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management
  • Maryam Bayi
  • Col. Abdulwahab Lawal (retd.)
  • Lekan Mustafa
  • Chris Okorie
  • Oforitsenere Emiko

President Tinubu stated that the appointments are in line with his administration’s strategy to reposition key national institutions for improved governance and service delivery.

Tinubu Also Nominates FERMA, NPC, INEC, and NDIC Board Members

In a separate letter to the Senate, President Tinubu also forwarded the names of nominees for other federal agencies:

  • Dr Musa Babayo – Chairman, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA)
  • Dr Aminu Yusuf – Chairman, National Population Commission (NPC)
  • Prof. Adeniran Raymond Tella – Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Oyo State, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
  • Keji Onwu – Independent Director, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC)

Additionally, nominations for positions on the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) were submitted for legislative approval.

Senate Refers Tinubu’s Appointees to Relevant Committees for Screening

Following the reading of the presidential communications, Senate President Akpabio referred the nominations to the appropriate Senate committees for vetting and screening.

The Senate directed its Committee on INEC to conclude screening of the Oyo REC nominee within one week, in line with its legislative timeline.

Constitutional Backing for Confirmation Process

Under Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), all presidential appointments into key federal executive positions must receive Senate confirmation before the nominees can formally assume their roles.
