Nigeria Dismisses Taiwan's Comments, Reaffirms Strong Ties with China

Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to the One-China Policy, reaffirming that Taiwan is an integral part of the People’s Republic of China. This statement was made by Mr. Jaafaru Yakubu, Chairman of the House Committee on China-Nigeria Parliamentary Relations, in Abuja on Tuesday, following comments made by Taiwan’s Trade Mission Head in Nigeria, Andy Yih-Ping Liu.

Liu had previously asserted that Taiwan is not part of China, a claim Mr. Yakubu quickly dismissed as baseless propaganda. The lawmaker pointed to United Nations Resolution 2758 of 1971, which recognizes the People’s Republic of China as the sole representative of all China, including Taiwan.

Mr. Yakubu further emphasized that Nigeria has upheld the One-China Policy since establishing diplomatic ties with China in 1971, condemning Taiwan’s attempts to dispute this stance as futile. He also criticized Liu’s remarks as an intentional effort to interfere in China’s internal matters and jeopardize Nigeria’s relations with Beijing.

Highlighting Nigeria’s strong partnership with China, Mr. Yakubu noted that the relationship is built on mutual respect and non-interference. In response to Liu’s claim that Beijing acts like a bully, the lawmaker stated that Nigeria’s relationship with China has been both cordial and mutually beneficial, with trade between the two nations surpassing 20 billion dollars.

Mr. Yakubu also pointed out that China has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s infrastructure development, including investments in railways, roads, ports, power, and water projects, further solidifying the countries’ ties.
