Zulum Urges Urgent Military Action as Boko Haram Resurgence Threatens Borno Stabilit

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has made a passionate appeal to the Federal Government and the Nigerian Armed Forces to take decisive action against a troubling resurgence of Boko Haram attacks across the state.

The governor issued the call during a Special Expanded Security Council Meeting held in Maiduguri, convened to address the recent spike in insurgent activity in Borno and parts of the North-East region.

Describing the renewed wave of violence as deeply alarming, Governor Zulum said it undermines years of progress made in stabilizing the state. He cited recent attacks and the overrun of military formations in Wajirko and Sabon Gari (Damboa LGA), Wulgo (Gamboru Ngala), and Izge (Gwoza LGA), which resulted in the loss of civilian and military lives.

“These are not just attacks; they are signals of regrouping insurgents who must be swiftly dislodged,” Zulum warned, emphasizing the need for proactive, offensive operations and technological enhancement of military capabilities, particularly along the volatile Sahelian belt bordering Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.

He further noted that Borno State has stood firmly behind the military, contributing resources and logistical support over the past three years — a partnership that helped achieve relative peace until the recent resurgence.

The Shehu of Borno, Dr. Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi, who represented the state’s traditional leaders at the meeting, commended the military’s efforts but called for the reestablishment of civil governance in areas like Guzamala, Abadam, and Marte LGAs. He also urged infrastructural intervention, particularly the rehabilitation of key roads.

Speaking after the closed-door session, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, said the security chiefs present pledged intensified counter-insurgency operations. He reaffirmed their commitment to restoring security and stability to Borno and the wider North-East region.

The security meeting was chaired by Governor Zulum and attended by the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Wadi Shaibu, other senior military officials, traditional rulers, and members of the State Executive Council.
