The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the worsening security situation across the country.
The warning was issued by the President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, during a joint media briefing held on the sidelines of the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva on Monday.
The labour centres expressed deep concern over the rising cases of insecurity, stating that the safety of workers and citizens can no longer be guaranteed in many parts of the country. They called on the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive measures to address the situation, warning that organised labour may resort to industrial action if adequate steps are not taken.
In addition to security concerns, the NLC and TUC urged the government to begin preparations for the renegotiation of the national minimum wage, which is due for review in July next year. The labour leaders emphasized that workers deserve improved welfare in view of the country’s prevailing economic realities.
They also dismissed reports by some state governors suggesting that discussions had already commenced on a proposed ₦100,000 minimum wage. According to the unions, such claims do not reflect the actual state of engagement between government and labour representatives.
The labour leaders maintained that any review of the minimum wage must follow the provisions of the law and be anchored on consultations involving all relevant stakeholders. They stressed that negotiations should be transparent and aimed at arriving at a mutually acceptable wage that reflects the cost of living and protects workers’ interests.
The development signals a potential showdown between organised labour and the government if concerns over insecurity and workers’ welfare remain unresolved in the coming months.
