R&B Star Wins Big Despite Divided Public Opinion

Kendrick Lamar was the undeniable star of the 2025 BET Awards, sweeping several top honors for his critically acclaimed sixth studio album, GNX.

The annual celebration of Black excellence in music, film, and sports took place Monday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with comedian Kevin Hart hosting the lively, star-studded event.

The Compton-born rapper took home five awards, including the coveted Album of the Year for GNX, Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, and Video of the Year for his hard-hitting visual “Not Like Us.”

Lamar also earned Best Collaboration alongside SZA for their fan-favorite track “Luther” and tied with longtime creative partner Dave Free for Video Director of the Year.

It was also a strong showing for R&B powerhouse SZA, who claimed Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and shared her win with Lamar for their collab.

Chris Brown picked up Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, while rising rap star Doechii was named Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, solidifying her spot among the genre’s elite.

In the acting categories, screen legend Denzel Washington won Best Actor, and Cynthia Erivo was honored as Best Actress for her powerful performances over the past year.

The show also paid tribute to music legends Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx, Kirk Franklin, and Snoop Dogg, each receiving the 2025 Ultimate Icon Award for their lasting impact on entertainment and culture.
