Imo Police Probe Fatal Crash Involving Gas Tanker, Church Bus

A tragic road accident on Tuesday in Imo State has claimed the lives of 12 people, including four children and eight adults, while eight others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The collision occurred when a gas tanker, reportedly marked T 16716 LA and bearing the NUPENG inscription, was allegedly driving against traffic. It crashed into a passenger bus transporting members of the Jehovah’s Witness Church from Anambra State to Agwa village in Imo.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, stated that the deceased have been moved to Ogbaku Mortuary, and the injured are receiving treatment at Divine Hospital Awo-Omamma.
“Regrettably, twelve persons lost their lives in the accident—eight adults and four children—while eight others were injured,” said Okoye.
He added that the scene was quickly cleared by a joint effort between the police, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Awo-Omamma, and personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), restoring normal traffic flow in the area.
Police have launched a full investigation into the crash. Meanwhile, Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and urged motorists to obey traffic rules and avoid reckless driving behaviors, particularly wrong-way driving.
