The Ondo State Government has approved the establishment of Diaspora Focal Desks across all 18 Local Government Areas, a move officials describe as a major step toward deepening grassroots participation in diaspora-driven development.
Announcing the initiative after a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure, the Commissioner for Regional Integration and Diaspora Relations, Otunba Wale Akinlosotu, said the new structure is designed to “bring diaspora engagement closer to the people” and unlock the socio-economic benefits of Ondo indigenes living abroad.
According to him, the desks will serve as local liaison points to improve communication, strengthen data gathering, coordinate community outreach, and enhance the mobilisation of diaspora-led interventions.
“Ondo State continues to set the pace as a model for subnational diaspora engagement in Nigeria — one that is people-focused, globally connected, and development-driven,” Akinlosotu said.
He explained that the initiative aligns with the administration’s OUR EASE vision, which emphasizes inclusiveness, accessibility, and community-centred development.
The announcement was made during a meeting involving the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, and all 18 Local Government Chairmen. Officials say the move decentralises diaspora engagement and ensures that every LGA benefits directly from global partnerships and development opportunities.
The initiative positions Ondo State among subnational governments such as Enugu, Kano, Cross River, Edo and the Federal Capital Territory that have already created diaspora-focused offices at the local government level.
The state government says the new desks will help strengthen ties with its global citizens and promote investment, cultural exchange, and policy support aimed at accelerating local development.
