Nigeria’s Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has called on Nigerians to embrace unity, remain vigilant, and actively contribute to nation-building as the country marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
In a Democracy Day message issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio commended Nigerians for their resilience and steadfast commitment to democracy despite the political and socio-economic challenges faced over the years.
He described Nigeria’s democratic journey as a testament to endurance and perseverance, noting that the nation had continued to advance despite periods of political agitation and uncertainty.
Speaking on behalf of the 10th National Assembly, the Senate President congratulated citizens for sustaining democratic rule for nearly three decades, adding that although mistakes had been made along the way, the country remained on course toward achieving its aspirations.
“While we may have made mistakes as a nation, I believe we will eventually reach our desired destination with the continued support and commitment of all Nigerians,” he said.
Akpabio urged citizens to remain committed to democratic principles and resist attempts by individuals or groups seeking to undermine the country’s democratic institutions.
He stressed that democracy should not be limited to periodic elections but should be anchored on accountability, justice, compassion, transparency, and service to the common good.
The Senate President also encouraged young Nigerians to become actively involved in politics and governance, describing them as the future leaders of the country.
“As we commemorate June 12, I wish to encourage the youth not to sit on the fence but to become active participants in the nation’s political activities. The youths constitute the fulcrum of those who will succeed us tomorrow,” he said.
On insecurity, Akpabio called for greater national unity and cooperation with government efforts to address security challenges across the country. He assured Nigerians that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remained committed to tackling terrorism and securing the release of citizens held captive by criminal groups.
“I urge every Nigerian to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in its efforts to fight terrorism. We understand the pains you are going through, but the government is not resting on its oars. Hopefully, we shall overcome this current challenge and all will be well with Nigeria,” he stated.
He further urged Nigerians to recommit themselves to the ideals of freedom, social justice, accountable governance, transparency, and active citizen participation as the nation continues its democratic journey.
