The Ebonyi State Government has announced a sweeping ban on all illegal motor parks operating within Abakaliki, the state capital. The enforcement of the ban will commence on Monday, September 15, 2025, as part of efforts to regulate urban transport and restore order to public spaces.
The decision was disclosed by the Commissioner for Capital City and Urban Development, Chief Sunday Elechi Inyima, following a joint meeting with key government officials, including the Commissioners for Transport, Market and Park Development, Environment, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport.
Chief Inyima stated that the government has identified four designated parks that are legally approved for commercial vehicle operations within the capital:
- Eze Igboke Ewa Central Park – Opposite Margaret Umahi International Market
- Chris Nwankwo Park (formerly Ishieke Park)
- Akanu Ibiam Park (also known as Building Materials Park)
- EBOTRANS Terminal
“We have agreed that all illegal parks within the capital city will be shut down,” Chief Inyima said. “Starting Monday, announcements will be made through the media to inform the public about government-approved parks. Any other loading points outside these will not be tolerated.”
According to the commissioner, bus shelters were designed strictly as waiting points for commuters — not as makeshift loading bays. He added that the unauthorised use of public spaces for loading and offloading passengers had contributed significantly to traffic congestion, urban disarray, and environmental degradation in the city.
“Indiscriminate loading in unauthorised locations has become a major cause of disorder in the city,” he stressed.
Chief Inyima assured the public that media announcements and sensitization campaigns will precede the enforcement action. Details regarding monitoring teams, penalties, and relocation procedures for affected transporters will be made available in the coming days.
