The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that Nigeria’s 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held next year, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls are scheduled for the following month.
The announcement was made by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a news conference in Abuja.
Amupitan said the commission had concluded preparations for the election timetable despite uncertainties surrounding the delayed amendment of the Electoral Act currently before the National Assembly.
“INEC has completed work on the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections,” the chairman said. “However, some aspects of the schedule may be adjusted depending on when the amended Electoral Act is eventually passed.”
INEC had earlier, on February 4, indicated that it had finalised its election roadmap and formally transmitted the timetable to lawmakers. The commission cautioned that delays in the legislative process could impact specific timelines within the schedule.
“We are proceeding with our constitutional responsibilities, but we remain guided by the law,” Amupitan added. “The commission will make necessary adjustments once the amended Electoral Act is concluded.”
The announcement comes amid growing concerns from political stakeholders and civil society groups over how the delay in amending the Electoral Act could affect preparations for the 2027 polls.
Further details are expected from INEC.
