Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has condemned in strong terms the recent bandits’ attack on Egbe community in Yagba West Local Government Area, describing it as a “brutal assault on peace and humanity in Kogi State.”
In a statement issued by Unubi Emmanuel, Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Governor Ododo mourned the deaths of security personnel, including gallant officers of the Nigeria Police Force and members of the local Vigilante Service, who lost their lives defending residents from the attackers.
“Their blood will not be shed in vain. We will not rest until those behind this heinous crime are tracked down, apprehended, and brought to justice,” the governor declared.
Governor Ododo assured the people of Kogi that his administration is intensifying efforts to strengthen security across the state. He emphasized increased collaboration with national security agencies, enhanced community policing, and improved logistical and financial support to local vigilante groups.
Extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the governor pledged that the state government would not abandon the dependents of the fallen heroes. He also praised the swift response of security operatives and vigilantes, noting their bravery in confronting threats to public safety.
Ododo urged residents to remain vigilant and actively support the fight against insecurity by cooperating with authorities and reporting suspicious activities. He warned individuals against aiding or harbouring criminals in any capacity.
“Together, we will overcome. Together, we will send a clear message that Kogi State cannot be broken,” Governor Ododo affirmed.
He concluded with prayers for the repose of the souls of the slain security personnel, comfort for their families, and a return of lasting peace across the state.
Earlier, while receiving the governor during a condolence visit to the affected community, Chairman of Yagba West Local Government Area, Hon. Tosin Olokun, thanked Governor Ododo for personally visiting Egbe. He described the governor’s presence as a reassuring gesture from a truly “caring government.”
State Security Adviser, Retired Commander Jerry Omodara, also addressed the gathering. He noted that the Egbe attack underscores the challenges faced by border communities in Kogi and reaffirmed that the government would not allow any part of the state to be overrun by criminals.
Commander Omodara disclosed that intelligence reports show that most of the bandits operating in Kogi are fleeing from neighbouring states. He assured the public that the state government, in collaboration with the Federal Government and the Office of the National Security Adviser, has identified several hideouts and is already taking action to intercept and neutralize the criminal elements.
He announced plans to establish a Forward Operation Base (FOB) in Egbe to improve response time and bolster security presence in the area. He also warned that local collaborators and saboteurs would be dealt with decisively.
In his remarks, His Royal Highness Oba Ayodele Irukera, the Elegbe of Egbe, appealed for a permanent and visible security presence in the area, noting that Egbe’s position as a border town makes it highly vulnerable to attacks.
He acknowledged the frustrations of local youths who recently blocked major roads in protest but apologized for the disruption. “It is inhuman for five people to be killed in just one day,” the monarch said, calling for immediate and sustained security measures to protect his people.
