Nigeria is mourning the passing of one of its most revered Christian leaders, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, who died on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80.
The news was confirmed in an official statement by his family on Monday, describing his death as a “glorious transition” from a lifetime of spiritual service to eternal rest.
Rev. Ukpai, the founder and spiritual leader of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, was a towering figure in Nigeria’s Christian community and a globally respected evangelist. His ministry spanned over six decades, during which he led countless crusades, mentored generations of ministers, and preached the gospel with unwavering passion.
“He was a faithful soldier of the cross who devoted his life to spreading the gospel with passion and integrity,” the family said.
Known for his dynamic teaching of the Word, prophetic ministry, and powerful evangelistic campaigns, Ukpai touched millions of lives in Nigeria and around the world. His impact was not limited to the pulpit—he championed education, humanitarian causes, and leadership development, leaving behind a legacy of spiritual depth and community empowerment.
A Life of Faith and Influence
Often referred to as a “spiritual general” and “founding father of faith” in Nigeria, Rev. Ukpai was widely admired for his humility, prophetic insight, and mentorship of emerging Christian leaders.
Beyond his public ministry, he was celebrated as a loving husband, devoted father, and a father figure to many in the Christian community. His family described his life as a fulfillment of the scripture: “To live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).
They added that while his physical presence will be deeply missed, his teachings and legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
