A Kano State High Court has sentenced four men to death by hanging for the murder of a local mechanic, Rilwanu Ilyasu, popularly known as Nanu, in the Farawa Layout area of Kano.

The convicts — Abubakar Sadiq (alias Alhaji Sallari), Abdulmajid Jibrin, Nasiru Sani, and Yusuf Sani— were found guilty of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, offences punishable under Sections 97 and 221(b) of the Penal Code.

According to the prosecution, led by Mr. Safiya Yalwati Yahaya, the tragic incident occurred on April 13, 2016. The court held that the convicts stormed the victim’s residence armed with an axe and other weapons, attacking him in retaliation for allegedly reporting one of them to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The report had allegedly led to the arrest of the suspect and the seizure of hard drugs and ₦27,000, prompting the fatal assault.

Ilyasu later died from the injuries he sustained during the attack.

During the trial, the prosecution called eight witnesses and tendered several exhibits, including the axe used in the attack.

After carefully reviewing the evidence, the presiding judge ruled that the four men were guilty as charged and sentenced them to death by hanging.

Two other suspects — Nura Farin Boss and Dan Bayo, remain at large, and efforts to apprehend them are ongoing.
