Amid growing insecurity in parts of northwestern Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi and Sokoto states, retired Colonel Samaila Yombe Dabai, former Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, has called on the government to prioritize community-based security strategies to counter the threat of terrorism.
In an interview with Radio Nigeria in Birnin Kebbi, Col. Yombe Dabai emphasized the critical role local vigilantes and retired security personnel can play in addressing the ongoing attacks by Lakurawa terrorists. According to him, community vigilantes possess deep knowledge of the terrain in affected areas and can serve as frontline responders in intelligence gathering and swift reaction.
“If properly equipped with modern weapons, these local operatives can maintain a close presence in high-risk zones and delay or disrupt bandit activities until conventional security forces arrive,” he stated.
The retired military officer also advocated for the recall of ex-service personnel, noting that their familiarity with military tactics would require minimal refresher training in weapon handling and fieldcraft to effectively supplement existing security forces.
Col. Dabai further highlighted the urgency of securing Nigeria’s porous borders, which he identified as a key entry point for cross-border criminal elements. He urged the government to intensify efforts in border surveillance to cut off external support to local insurgents.
Quoting the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, he echoed the need for integrating local actors into national security strategies: “There is a need for local content to support the armed forces in the fight against insecurity.”
He concluded by urging government authorities to prioritize the protection of lives and property, reminding them that communities look to the state for safety to sustain their livelihoods.
