**As part of activities marking International Mathematics Day, education stakeholders have called on students to dispel myths about mathematics and embrace its creative aspects for better learning outcomes**.
In **Kaduna**, students, teachers, and parents shared insights on how to foster a positive attitude toward the subject. They emphasized that a change in perception could help students overcome the fear of mathematics and unlock its real-world applications.
International Mathematics Day is observed annually on **March 14**. The day was officially proclaimed by **UNESCO** during its 40th General Conference in **November 2019**. It aims to raise global awareness of mathematics as a crucial tool in addressing challenges related to **artificial intelligence, climate change, energy, and sustainable development**.
Speaking to **Radio Nigeria**, a mathematics teacher at **Fountains of Knowledge Schools, Mrs. Agata Abah**, stressed that mathematics is not inherently difficult but is often perceived as such due to misconceptions passed down over time.
> “Mathematics becomes easier with constant practice and interest. Many students who once struggled with the subject have significantly improved with the right approach,” she said.
Another mathematics teacher, **Mr. Adebayo Ademola**, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the difficulty of the subject often depends on the teaching approach. He advocated for **a friendly and engaging learning environment** to help students develop an interest in the subject.
Similarly, **Mrs. Ayotunde Akin**, a teacher at **Kingdom Heritage Model School, Goni-Gora**, shared how she incorporates **creative teaching methods** to make mathematics more engaging for her students. She highlighted that mathematics serves as the **foundation for all other subjects**, making it essential for students to develop an interest in it.
She also noted the positive impact of **mathematics competitions and ambassador awards**, stating that such initiatives have motivated many students to take the subject more seriously.
A parent and clergyman, **Pastor Vincent Eje**, underscored the importance of mathematics in everyday life. He urged parents to support their children by providing them with necessary learning materials, such as textbooks and workbooks, to aid comprehension.
**Dr. Hilary Francis** of the **Mathematics Africa Project** explained that they use International Mathematics Day to **recognize outstanding students** through the **Mathematics Ambassador Awards and Certificates**, which serve as an encouragement to young learners.
The **theme for the 2025 International Mathematics Day** is **“Mathematics, Art, and Creativity.”** This theme highlights the **intersection of mathematics with artistic and creative disciplines**, further demonstrating its relevance beyond conventional calculations.
