The Senate has passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing stiffer penalties for a range of traffic offences in a bid to improve road safety and strengthen compliance with traffic regulations.
Under the amendment, motorists who fail to obey traffic lights, road signs, pavement markings or other road markings will, upon conviction, be liable to a fine of N100,000.
The bill also prescribes a N50,000 fine for anyone found hawking, trading or preaching inside commercial vehicles.
The proposed legislation significantly increases the penalty for driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating drugs from N5,000 to N100,000. Offenders may also face up to two years’ imprisonment or both a fine and imprisonment upon conviction.
Motorists who refuse to cooperate with FRSC officials during roadside breath tests conducted on reasonable suspicion will be liable to a N50,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both.
Similarly, the penalty for exceeding speed limits has been increased from N5,000 to N100,000, while reckless driving will now attract a N100,000 fine, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both.
According to the Senate, the amendment is designed to strengthen the enforcement powers of the FRSC, improve compliance with traffic laws and enhance safety on Nigerian roads.
The bill has been passed by the Senate and will become law if it receives presidential assent.
