Ahmedabad, India, has been recommended as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a significant milestone as the event celebrates its centenary edition.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Commonwealth Sport, the governing body of the Games, confirming that the Indian city was selected ahead of a rival bid from Abuja, Nigeria.

The decision follows an evaluation process and is expected to be ratified at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26, 2025.

India’s Second Time as Host

If ratified, this will be the second time in 20 years that India hosts the Games. The country previously held the event in 2010, when the capital city, New Delhi, staged a widely watched edition of the Games.

Ahmedabad, located in the western state of Gujarat, boasts world-class infrastructure, including the Narendra Modi Stadium — the largest stadium in the world with a capacity of 132,000. The venue previously hosted the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final, showcasing its ability to host major global sporting events.

With a population exceeding five million, Ahmedabad has also been floated as a future Olympic Games contender.

“We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships, and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth,”
— Dr. P. T. Usha, President, Commonwealth Games Association India

Abuja Misses Out Again

This marks the second time Abuja has lost out on hosting the Games. The Nigerian capital was also overlooked for the 2014 edition, which was awarded to Glasgow.

While disappointing for Nigeria, the selection of Ahmedabad reflects the country’s growing influence in global sports, and its readiness to host large-scale international events.

Looking Ahead

With ratification expected next month, preparations are likely to accelerate in Ahmedabad as it prepares to welcome athletes and officials from over 70 Commonwealth nations in 2030.
