The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following a screening session held on Thursday.

Amupitan, a distinguished Professor of Law and senior academic, was nominated by the presidency to head the electoral body and steer Nigeria’s democratic process through upcoming elections.

The confirmation came after a thorough screening process on the Senate floor, during which lawmakers reviewed his qualifications, track record, and vision for electoral reform in Nigeria.

His appointment is expected to bring legal expertise and renewed focus to INEC’s mandate of conducting free, fair, and credible elections. Stakeholders are hopeful that under his leadership, the commission will address key challenges including voter registration, electoral transparency, and logistics management.

Amupitan replaces the outgoing INEC Chairman and is set to take office at a time when the National Assembly is deliberating amendments to the 2022 Electoral Act, aiming to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral framework.
