The Federal Government has congratulated the Super Eagles for clinching the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Egypt’s Pharaohs in the third-place playoff.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, praised the national team for their resilience, discipline, and impressive performance throughout the tournament.
Idris described the Super Eagles’ campaign as a source of pride and inspiration to Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora, noting that the team upheld the country’s rich football heritage with courage and unity.
“From the group stages to the final whistle in Casablanca, you demonstrated heart, skill, and belief in one another. You didn’t just play football; you inspired millions of Nigerians,” the minister said.
He noted that the bronze medal further strengthens Nigeria’s enviable record in Africa Cup of Nations history, emphasizing that the team’s display against formidable opponents reflected discipline and an unwavering fighting spirit.
The minister also commended the coaches, players, and support staff for their commitment and sacrifices, stressing that their collective effort reaffirmed Nigeria’s status as a powerhouse in African football.
“To every player who wore the green and white jersey, and to the coaches and support staff, thank you for your dedication. You faced challenges with determination and represented Nigeria with pride,” Idris said.
Although the Super Eagles fell short of winning the tournament, the minister said the bronze medal was earned with honour and belongs to every Nigerian who supported the team throughout the competition.
He urged the players to celebrate the achievement and use it as motivation ahead of future international engagements.
The Super Eagles secured the bronze medal after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in a tense third-place match at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca. The encounter ended goalless after regulation time before goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero, saving spot-kicks from Mohamed Salah and Oumar Marmoush.
The victory marked Nigeria’s ninth third-place finish at the AFCON and preserved their flawless record in third-place playoff matches.
