President Bola Tinubu has joined a host of global leaders in Vatican City for the highly anticipated inauguration of Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Leo XIV, marking a significant moment in the history of the Catholic Church. The Chicago-born cleric officially becomes the 267th pontiff and the first American to lead the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.

On Sunday morning, St Peter’s Square was filled with tens of thousands of pilgrims and dignitaries as Pope Leo XIV made his debut appearance aboard the iconic popemobile, blessing the faithful and waving to cheering crowds ahead of his inaugural mass.

Among the distinguished guests in attendance were US Vice President JD Vance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, and Israeli President Isaac Herzog. The event drew leaders from across continents, reflecting the Church’s global reach and influence.

A New Era for the Catholic Church

Pope Leo XIV was elected on May 8, 2025, following a swift conclave of cardinals. The 69-year-old previously spent over two decades as a missionary in Peru and, though relatively unknown to many Catholics, has quickly captured hearts with his message of peace, social justice, and defense of traditional Catholic values.

In his first week, the new pontiff made a series of public addresses, emphasizing the importance of global peace in a conflict-ridden world and upholding the sanctity of family as a union between a man and a woman. He also spoke passionately in defense of the unborn, signaling a continuity of core doctrinal positions.

“I came early because I wanted to see him,” said 71-year-old Inacia Lisboa, a Cape Verde native now living in Rome. “He’s already entered my heart. The world needs his prayers for peace.”

Security and Tradition at the Vatican

Italian authorities deployed thousands of security personnel, rooftop snipers, and anti-drone operations to ensure the safety of attendees. Despite modern security measures, the ceremony remained steeped in ancient tradition.

Before presiding over the mass, Pope Leo XIV paid homage at the tomb of Saint Peter — Christianity’s first pope — beneath the basilica’s altar. He then received the Fisherman’s Ring and the pallium, emblems of his papal authority.

While no pope has been crowned since 1963, the inauguration maintained its grandeur, with the new pontiff processing alongside cardinals and clergy as large screens broadcast the event to the vast gathering in St Peter’s Square.

Global Attention on Pope Leo XIV’s Leadership

Pope Leo XIV steps into leadership at a time when the Catholic Church continues to grapple with past scandals and modern societal challenges. Yet, his election has generated palpable excitement, particularly in the United States, where his appointment represents a historic first.

Notably, US Vice President JD Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio led the American delegation. The Vatican has yet to confirm if any visiting leaders will be granted private audiences following the ceremony.

As Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, Catholics and observers worldwide will closely watch how his leadership shapes the future of the Church in an increasingly complex global landscape.
