The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its indefinite strike, with members expected to resume work on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 8:00 a.m.

Dr. George Ebong, President of the FCT chapter, confirmed the suspension during an interview with Channels Television on Friday.

According to Ebong, the decision followed the intervention of the Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory Area Councils and Ancillary Matters, which promised to facilitate urgent dialogue with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

“None of our demands have been met yet,” Ebong clarified. “However, based on assurances from the Senate Committee, we have decided to suspend the strike while waiting for concrete action.”

The FCT chapter of NARD had declared an indefinite strike last week, citing several unresolved issues including unpaid salary arrears dating back to 2023, unexplained deductions from allowances and failure to upgrade resident doctors who have completed specialist training but are still being paid as medical officers

The strike severely impacted public healthcare delivery in the capital, prompting emergency intervention by lawmakers.

Senate Committee Assures Follow-up

Earlier this week, Toscad news reported that the Senate Committee led by Senator David Jimkuta (Taraba South) appealed to the doctors to suspend the strike, pledging to escalate the matter directly to the FCT Minister. The committee also proposed a joint negotiation session involving the National Assembly, FCT health authorities, and representatives of NARD FCT.
