American singer Mary J. Blige has revealed that watching family members struggle with childcare influenced her decision not to have children when she was younger.

Speaking on the Michelle Obama Podcast, Blige said she saw relatives struggle with raising children, relying on babysitters and giving up some of their freedom.

“When I was younger, I saw my family members struggle raising kids, needing babysitters, not having freedom, so when I was younger I made the choice not to have any kids,” she said.

However, the singer said her perspective changed as she grew older, particularly after seeing the close relationships her relatives have developed with their teenage children.

“But now as I got older and get to see how their teenagers are valuable to them, I sometimes regret not having them early too,” she said.

Blige’s comments reflect how views on parenthood can change with age and life experiences. Although she was once certain about her decision, seeing the bond between her relatives and their children has made her reconsider what she might have experienced as a mother.
